Deep Tuttle Weed Fins and Old Boards -- poor fit

My deep tuttle weed fins don't fit to the bottom of my boards well (so
I catch small weeds between the fin and the board). I feel like if I
had something two or three times the width of fin sheath material, it
might work. Part of the problem is that my stuff is "old" -- circa
2003 and that I'm sharing my deep tuttle fins between two boards from
two different manufacturers (it seemed like a cost-saving idea at the
time). I'm sure many of you will read this and say: "Been there,
solved that." What did you do? Thanks in advance for sharing your
wisdom.

I made another thin shim out of gasket material to fill the gap - works fine

I used double-sided foam tape. A little messy, and doesn't last
forever... but it does the job.

Tangentially: seems like lately my Tuttle fins have been fitting
various boxes transparently - but a few years ago, every one had
tb custom fit.

Something with the mould-making technology?

John,
Do you really have a 4 - 6 mm gap? If so, that's really tough to fill a gap
that large. If you don't want to sand the fin, try some firm, closed-cell
foam with adhesive backing:
www.mcmaster.com
(McMaster's EVA foam is too soft. Try the silicone)

Re: Deep Tuttle Weed Fins and Old Boards -- poor fit

Tuttle fins typically have to be custom fitted to the board. This
generally involves either adding or removing material from the front
and back ends of the fin head. Since your fin is not going deep
enough into the box, you need to remove material from the fin head.
One trick is to use a magic marker or crayon on the ends of the fin
head. Insert into the box and then remove to see where the marker has
rubbed away. The rubbed area is the high spot and should be filed
down. Take your time and only do a small amount before re-checking
the fit.

You want the fin to fit into the box so that the overhanging portion
of the fin (the part that extends in front of the box) is
approximately 1/16" off of the skin of the board. You don't want the
overhang to touch the skin of the board because it may damage the
board.

Once you have achieved this, contact cement a piece of 1/8" boom grip
to the overhang and trim. You can use the self adhesive foam that
comes with most fins, but it doesn't adhere as well as contact
cement. When you tighten down the fin screws, the boom grip will
compress and prevent weeds from getting caught between the fin and
board.

have you checked the screw lingth sometimes the screw will prevent the fin
from seating if it is too long
if screw bottoms out in fin cut an 1/8 off always tighten front then back on
old boards finbox can widen and allow fin to drop too deep

Thanks for your comments. I now have confidence that, using your
ideas, this problem will be solved.

Thanks again,
