Being held right now in Santa Barbara...20' Hobie Tigers...

It's been going off here for days...smoking winds...gale force...too
busy windsurfing to check out races up close, yet...amazing that they
have even had heats...will take my boat out or shoot from shore when I
get a chance...

I'd be amazed if they're going to get the chutes out:

They do fly small spinnakers on the downwind legs. I've never sailed a hobie
but it looks like they can't really reef the main? I guess they can go with
small jibs but it's been very windy here for the last few days. I was well
powered on my Evo 92 with 5.3 today. God it must be scary to pitch-pole one
of those things.

water...races were cancelled at 1455 hrs...

Video from first day's race:

> The first day of racing was a wild one. The wind came up during the racing and was reported to be in the high 20s and gusts to about 30 mph. We had many teams retire and quite a lot of sail and batten damage from capsizes. Only about 27 teams finished. Some teams went straight in to the beach rather than fight back upwind to the regatta beach area. It was a scramble to account for all the boats, but 87 started and 87 were accounted for. More high wind is in the forecast in the following days

Nope, no way to reef the main, just downhaul the hell out of it. I'm
surprised they're even sailing with the jib out upwind considering how
windy it is.

Downwind has got to be a serious sleigh ride. Pitch-poling isn't much
fun, in fact it can be downright violent sometimes. The worst part
though is usually getting the boat back upright because the boat is
oriented with the bows pointing downwind, sail being driven under. You
need the bows into the wind to get it back up which means a lot of
swimming. Wish I was there..

Wardog are you the same Wardog that posted the aerotech phantom pics
for me? If so thanks. I stared at that bungee for awhile trying to
figure it out! Do you like your phantom? I am excited to give mine a
try but need to get some decent weather.

Re: 2005 Hobie Tiger World Championships

I love it!
Quite a few old school windsurfers first learned the "way of the wind"
on Hobies.
But, just 10kts can flip one so the pic should show WARDOG tail walkin'
on his 3.7 for the true story ;-)

Per J. M. Colee:

I think it depends on the model.

One of my 16's had reefing points - but they kept tearing out.
In a pinch, you can sail a 16 on just the main or just the jib though.
