Debbi Wilkes (grumble)

http://www.tsn.ca/figure_skating/news_story.asp?ID=107289&hubName=figure_skating

"Unless the rest of you know something I don't, like some legitimate
reason to selfishly "dis" the ISU by not participating in the GP, I
think both Kwan and Cohen, providing they qualify through US Nationals,
should have their world invitations revoked immediately."

Since when did Debbi become an enforcer for Speedy? Am I the only one
who sees a conflict of interest on her part, with her connection to
competitions?

Phil Hersh kinda answered Ms. Wilkes:

"Sounds like ISU Pres. O. Cinquanta did a little digital ventriloquism
with Ms. Wilkes, an ISU specialist, acting as the puppet."

This says it all, doesn't it. Good old Phil. Sometimes he hits the
nail on the head. How did Wilkes get to be a "specialist" in anything?
Who died and made her a specialist?

She has a conflict in interest here in her statements and she doesn't
acknowledge it at all...that says a lot about her IMO.

I think he means "specialist" in the CoP sense, that she is going to be
the "technical specialist" a.k.a. the caller at some ISU events this year.
Since she is a world and Olympic medalist, a long time commentator, and
the author of two books about skating, I would wager that she is no less
qualified than any of the other people acting as callers....which seems to
be a very difficult job, given the variation we're seeing in how the same
event is rated at different events, but that's another story...

Nevertheless, I do agree with you about the conflict of interest and her
non-acknowledgement of it. AFAIK the Globe and Mail is the only media
outlet in Canada that has brought this issue to light. I suppose on one
level it's not that different from e.g. baseball "announcers" who work for
the team and not the broadcast outlet, but that doesn't make it right.
What will she or Tracy Wilson or CTV when the ISU next
does something really outrageously stupid and wrong? It will make all of
them look very bad if they try to whitewash it.

Haven't we already had this discussion? FWIW, I sent her an e-mail about
what I thought of her comments. It will be interesting to see if she
answers it.

I read the article - she sounds like she needs meds. I guess Speedy will
by them for her.....Kwan and Plushy banned, humph, whatever, Heather!
