Sweeeeeeeeeep

Those who know me probably think this is about the UNC/Maryland game today.
Hah! It's not.

It's about UNC's season sweep of the Duke Blue Devils in women's
basketball. Nice to see it, since I'll freely admit that Duke has
dominated the ACC for the last five years. This UNC squad has some serious
grit, and it actually quite fun to watch because they're so stinkin fast.
Man, watching Latta play is like the women's version of Felton. She's got
great handle and great quickness. She might be a better shooter! Wow.
Great game.

I'll be having nightmares of that Bales chick, too. She had a ton of
blocks.

Fans of entertaining and good solid fundimental basketball ignore the
women's college game at their own peril.

Are you a WNBA fan Pauli?

No, not really. Only because summer, to me, is baseball season (and
baseball only). I only give the WNBA a cursory glance, mainly to
check the stats of a few favorite players.

It was nice to see the Lady Heels finally get over on Duke. Now if
they can just win the tourney... which apparently is all that matters
in sports.

Out of curiosity, why do you ask?

It's not that I think they have a bad product, I'm just preoccupied
with baseball in the summer, then UConn football in the early fall.
We have a WNBA team in Connecticut, but the WNBA folks must have been
smoking crack when they allowed the team to be based at the Mohegan Sun
casino complex. Not so much that they are based in a casino, but
because that part of Connecticut is sparsely populated and somewhat
hard to reach from Connecticut's major population centers, and
therefore doesn't draw as well as Hartford would have.

Oh, so can I call Duke national champions for finishing in 1999 & 2002
as the #1 team in the country?

Hey, finishing first in a conference is a nice accomplishment. But
even you will admit it's lost some of its meaning when not every team
plays every other team the same number of times. if UNC can, for
example, can finish one game ahead of Duke despite playing the
potential #2 team in the conference (Wake) only one time while Duke
had to play them twice.

Same reason why I think winning a division in baseball isn't as
impressive any more, by the way, thanks to the abomination that is
interleague play (yep, I'm a bit of a traditionalist).

This was about the women, though, who SWEPT Duke *and* had the toughest of
the unbalanced schedules (or so I heard, but haven't verified myself).

Agreed. And get rid of the stupid DH.

Just curious. If you were watching the Tarheel ladies I thought you
might be watching the WNBA too. Generally that league has gotten
pretty bad reviews, but the product has improved over the last two or
three years. I still find it difficult to watch simply because it is
played so far below the rim. But they do play a team game, and you can
see the reason why the USA womens team dominates the Olympics and the
men don't.

I know, but I'm just responding to kstarheel's general point with
reference to the men's game.

It does take some getting used to, but it has a beauty of its own due
to the solid fundamentals, almost like you're watching a basketball
clinic on how the game was meant to be played.
