Is Skydiving scary?

I want to try skydiving someday but I am afraid to take that potential
LEAP. Can somebody give me some advice and information about it?

Advice: Listen to your instructors and if you jump, buy your beer -
they'll tell you about that at the dropzone.

Information: Check your yellow pages under skydiving or parachuting
for a dropzone near you. Call them and ask questions. Dropzone.com
is a good source for a variety of information, FAQ's, dropzone
websites, ect.

Good Luck and Blue Skies!

Jerry

If you live close enough, I suggest that you not only call the local
dropzone(s), but take the time to go there and check out the place, as
well as internet searching. You'll get a feel for whether you are
comfortable jumping there, and can see their setup. Ask plenty of
questions. If you can overcome your fear, you will never look back. If
you decide to skydive, you will forever be changed. You will know why
we do it... (grin)
Good luck!

Read http://uspa.org/about/index.htmand then choose from your nearby
dropzones, e.g. http://uspa.org/dz/states/UT.htm

It can be very frightening. I mean, you're gonna stand next to
an open door of an airplane, potentially outside of an airplane door,
and then let go. If there is some part of you that isn't a little
apprehensive about doing such a thing, especially for the first time,
not only is there something wrong with you, but you probably
should consider another sport.

It took me about 75 jumps before my palms didn't get sweaty
on the way up. Flip side is I always wanted to go, and go again.
Not everyone enjoys it. Some only enjoy it once. Some can't
get enough.

My usual advice about skydiving is to remember that you could
die having this much fun. How you look at that advice probably
tells you alot about whether you'll enjoy it.

Most of the guys around DZ's are only interested in getting into your
pocket book or between your legs-----the skydiving part is nothing up
besides the pressure you will be under to put out, don't try to buy
friends......be yourself-----I think thats why Skydiving chicks are
often so mean. ;)

It's only as scary as you make it. Some people see the "boogie man"
every time it turns dark. Skydiving isn't for everyone, but for those
who try it and like it, it's the portal to a new dimension.

"Beautiful Streamer" (Tune of "Beautiful Dreamer")

Beautiful streamer, open for me,
Blue skies above me and no canopy;
Counted nine thousands, counted too long,
Reached for the rip cord, the damn thing was gone.

Beautiful streamer, why must it be?
White silk above me is what I should see,
Just like my mother that looks over me;
To hell with the rip cord, 'twas not made for me.

Beautiful streamer, follow me down,
Time is elapsing and here comes the ground;
Six hundred feet and then I can tell,
If I'll go to heaven or end up in hell.

Beautiful streamer, this is the end,
Gabriel is blowing, my body won't mend;
All you jump happy son's of a gun,
Take this last warning as jumping's no fun.

Brought to you by a buddy of Old Yellow Stain

Yeah probably. As you may have noticed, I have a way of setting off
emotional types. I found women who skydived to be rather pushy, its a
pushy sport ya really can't blame them----some seemed to suffer a lot
of PMS when they ran up against mean old Mr.bite my ass or stick it in
your ear if you don't like it darling. 0~;- >

because we have to win the Nationals type, male or female......Just to

Oh yeah, jumping was a lot of fun.....to bad so many anal young people
get into it, it could be a lot more fun if Zen ruled. Chuck you really
should take a PROZAC and try to relax----pain med not working or what?
You can build up tolerance to that....ask the Doc about muscle
relaxers or perhaps some 10 mg
Valiums in the mix to take the edge off all that withdrawal anxiety----
Its all in your mind anyway, you need to relax kid, try to be more
like me... Ya know laid back and laughing, bobing & weaving while
jabbing & throwing hooks left and right because ~it don't mean
nothing~ 0~ ;-*

Never let up.....all the way every day....Only a sucker gives a

was Mr. nice guy? Jimbo's the one that breaks my heart, he could have

I had already come & gone. He needed a Leading Petty Officer like me
around to toughen him up, square him away. Now look at him..... eat up
with jump vanity, falls right in with DZ politics and has even gotten

-with apologies to Freddie Mercury

<sung to "Bohemian Rhapsody" >

Is it time to pitch out?
The low air is so intriguing
Caught out in a longspot
No escape from reality-
Just below my knees
Look down to the trees and see-
Iím always first to land, I need no sympathy-
Because Iím easy come, easy go,
Open little high, hooking little low,
Anyway the wind blows, down-wind doesnít really matter to me,
To me.

Low-turn, just killed a man,
Planet slammed against his head,
Cranked a toggle, now heís dead,
Maybe, he was just turning into the wind,
But now he's gone and thrown it all away-
Maybe - ooo,
Didnít mean to bounce so high-
If my gear isn't divided up by this time tomorrow-
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters-

Too late, my time has come,
Sends fractures 'cross my spine-
And I'm breaking both my femurs this time,
Goodbye everybody-Iíve got to go-
Gotta leave you all behind and take this ambulance ride-
Maybe ooo- (down from where the wind blows)
I donít want to be last down,
And now I wish Iíd never gone up at all-

Zen ruling? Ummm, isn't that concept in of itself, a little bit at
cross-purposes?

Don't do it Chuck - it's a trick - "be like me," as in not jumping and
blowing hot air out your ass in lieu of having a clue.

Even when you type in all caps, say you're pissed off, threaten

Yep, I've heard about your battles with Deguello, Eric Harper was
jumping here in the Northeast for a few years. I jumped With Berke in
the late '70s when he was running Spring Creek, north of Houston. He
let me on a formation load (2 182's) even though I had only made a
couple of jumps there, and we got our 8-way. I thought he was OK back then.

Burke was OK, he was a good team Captain....He just had to keep all of
those prima donna's on the same page and here I was skulking around
freaking them out.
Actually quite a few of the Original Deguello's were all right. Jim
and Bonnie Parker
for instance. It was the try outs coming in trying to make the team
that were frazzled and rather rude. I psyched them so bad, all I had
to do was walk by and grin
they fell apart. The regulars were used to my eccentric
behaviour....Looking back it was probably my bad. poor cluck frantic
to make the cut.....hanging on by a string and heres some fun jumper
screwing with them. ;)
