nerve or muscle?

About 6 months ago, while working out in the gym, laying on back and pushing
a leg press, I felt a bit of an ache in the muscle of my left butt (sorry,
but I don't know what other term to use). It was about 3ins away from the
spine. I attributed it to perhaps doing 1 set too many. The ache actually
turned to pain and spread to the thigh muscle and left knee.

I've since been doing lots of gentle leg stretching (no weights) and short
runs, take ibuprofen, rub Bengay on knee and left butt, but the ache still
persists though not as bad as before. I've been told it might be a damaged
nerve, sciatia...whatever, might be arthritis, not to run anymore, etc. I
don't know what to believe. Warm packs actually bring on more pain instead
of helping. I have been to see a couple of docs but they've told me it's
probably stretched muscles. But 6 months! I'm female, 5'3", 48y.o. and
112lbs.

I have only done 5 marathons and would like to start training for next
year's Disney Marathon. Should I? Or should I wait till the ache goes away?
Advice will be greatly appreciated.
Tks in advance
