Harmison

Hi Aussies,

Just wondering what the reaction has been, if any, on Harmison's performance
against the Windies in the Aussie press. One-hit-wonder, or something
special?

No reaction.

To be completely honest, the Australian press is completely oblivious to
cricket not involving Australia. Personally, though, I'm quite interested to
see him the next time Australia play England.

Regards,
Ben.

Suprised to hear that. Our press (UK) love to hate us when we lose, love us
when we win...but there's usually coverage of other countries' players and
how they're performing. If an Aussie had just taken 23 wickets in a series,
we wouldn't hear the end of it!

Second rate bowler bowling to second rate batsmen.

I don't think the Poms have had a decent fast bowler since Bob Willis retired.

The biggest mention down here was obviously Lara...Tony Greig who was
commentating came out and said it was a selfish act...another Aussie
commentator said exactly the same...

I don't know if I'm alone but I don't take that much attention to
overseas matches not involving Australia...

Steve Harmison is one of the Upcoming players of world cricket. He get good
bounce and movement off the seam and is quick too! GUN.

So when Lara scored his record there was no mention in the Australian press
?

btw: sarcasm is the word

There was nothing. We got some stuff on Lara's innings. But other than that
there was very little coverage of the series at all. There may have been the
odd brief article embedded in the sport pages quickly outlining the game but
nothing else. There was nothing in particular written about Harmison.

The Australian press cares for little other than Australia when it comes to
cricket.

Jason

Yes because 400 gets scored all the time. Care to mention any other times
the Australian press has mentioned anything from overseas? Even the talk of
Lara disappeared after one day.

True patriotism or narrow single-mindedness? I'm not trying to be
contraversial - I love Australia, have family living there, and admire your
sport teams greatly. It just suprises me how little your press devote to
other countries' sides

I think it's more that most people here just don't care. The media is only
interested in what people are interested in. Off the top of my head, two of
the most covered media events have been the death of Princess Di and
September 11th. I think international news gets some coverage, just not
international sports.

Also, I wonder if there would be a difference if England were world
champions or any other side, for that matter. I think the media might cover
that particular side a bit more.

Regards,
Ben.

I maybe because we're so successful in recent times...the press down
here are brutal with our team performances...
