England Versus West Indies

I watched a portion of the game- less than half- but followed the scores
with interest.

I know England are now rated Number 2- a fair way behind Australia- in Test
cricket. But this Test tends to confirm to me how much the WI have slipped
rather than any gains by England.

Just points that I think indicate this- and I know folks will have very
strong arguments either way are these:

1. Keys getting a double century. He was a fill in for Butcher and prior
exposure hardly indicated this was in him.
2. Vaughan's double century- undoubtedly a good player but prior to this was
flat out buying a run.
3. Giles hat full of wickets. In Bothams words- a non spinning spinner.

And why did Lara send them in in the first place? He may not have had much
spin material, but why would he think on exposed WI form that he could
dismiss England cheaply?

Now- just to refresh my memory (I haven't researched this)- when was the
last time England beat RSA, India, or SL in a series.

Strauss IS good and knows which ones to leave- vital for a lefty and
something Trescothick cant do (a weakness the aussies explioted last ashes).

I think Flintoff is fantastic and has really developed into a class player.
I fear what he will do to warnie when he eventually faces him- with his
reach and power i can see damage being done.

Thorpe is a class act and i always fear him when he comes out to bat- with a
decent batting line-up around him he will be even more dangerous.

The bowling doesnt scare me much though, although Anderson can move it at
pace and Harmison has speed and a newly discovered work ethic and menace,
but I believe he still bowls too short and doesnt attack the stumps enough.

Still no spinner of real note, although Giles is getting wickets at present
if you cant get wickets as a spinner in late summer in engalnd you wont get
them anywhere.

I'll wait until I see Strauss produce against a high class attack.

I'll wait until Flintoff, Harmison and Giles also produce consistently- and
with Thorpe I'll wait until he doesn't pick and choose which Test series he
will play in.

I don't think there's any doubt Thorpe is a very good player. Though his
best days are probably behind him.
