Oddsmakers bet on surfing

Selected odds for 2008 world title from Sporting-odds.com: Mick
Fannning, 4.5-1; Kelly Slater 6-1; Andy Irons 8-1; Damien Hobgood
34-1; C.J. Hobgood 41-1.

Slater and the Hobgoods are local so they get their numbers printed in
the local dead tree. My own slight contact with people in the pro
surfing circuit is about the way their sponsors jerk them around, this
should give them a focal point.

What were the odds professional surfing would become part of online
wagering?

At least three sites, USA bookmaker BetUs, South African bookmaker
Black Pearl Betting and Surfing-Odds.com, are posting odds on all 11
events on the Association of Surfing Professionals' World Tour, which
is under way this week with the Quiksilver Pro in Coolangatta,
Australia.

Internet bettors can wager from $5 to $10,000 on any heat during a
contest, or bet against odds for the next world champion.

For instance, defending champion Mick Fanning of Australia is 4.25-
to-1 to repeat his title, while eight-time world champion Kelly Slater
of Cocoa Beach is listed as 6-to-1 on Surfing-Odds.com, a site which
allows the bettor to "compare" the best odds from bookmakers around
the world.

"I haven't come across that here in Vegas," said Rick Schultz, of
Vegas Experts, a betting "information" company. "But they've been
betting on anything from the Oscars to politics, especially the
Democratic race. Maybe (wagering on surfing) is not that big yet in
the U.S., but maybe Hawaii . . ."

Cocoa Beach's Todd Holland, who spent a decade on the World Tour
starting in 1987 and finished as high as eighth, doesn't mind the
addition of gambling.

"It's pretty cool," he said. "Surfing has continually been going into
the mainstream. As long as the athletes don't get caught up in it, I
don't see a problem. I had my own reasons to do well out there, and I
think that pretty much goes for most of those guys."

We'll see what the sponsor says.
